Their transition to being back home and the subsequent issues dealing with the attack and life is well done, ending with the realization that their stability as a couple will be a source of comfort and strength. Together the men both want to move beyond the incident for the sake of their lover, if not themselves and struggle with the desire to simply escape and leave all their problems in Reno.
The sole explicit sex scene is filled with lust and humor combining a fun tone to the serious theme of the story. Their level of intimacy is conveyed well through the small gestures and comfort level between the men that doesn’t eclipse the desire and sexual connection. Although the characters are not much defined or developed due to the style of the story, their connection and love for each other is clear and vibrant. This story is very much a day in the life as Jason and Pete reflect on their last day at the beach before heading back to the real world in Nevada. Jason and Pete have gone on vacation to visit Pete’s family and took an impromptu extended break at the beach on their way back home to Reno.
The attention to detail and level of emotion conveyed make this one of the better short stories I’ve read and a great example of why this author has vaulted onto my auto-buy list with his writing. There are a lot of elements incorporated within this quick story but the strength of the author’s writing shines as each is well handled and leaves a great story that could develop into more or be left as a short story perfectly fine. This fabulous short story shows a strong, loving relationship between two men as they struggle with the aftermath of a senseless act.
